Soap2day – Queen used to find it annoying when crowds sang every word to their songs. Brian May, the band's guitarist, said that they were mad because they wanted their fans to hear the great lyrics they had spent hours writing.
"Because we thought, "Just listen, people. We're working really hard, so listen up!' But they couldn't be stopped, "Brian told the magazine Total Guitar. "On this one night, they knew every word to every song, which was pretty unusual back then."
"I mean, I went to a Zeppelin concert, and I don't remember anyone singing along to "Communication Breakdown" or whatever they were playing. They paid attention when Zeppelin played. They shook their heads and paid attention. I thought about our concerts and said to myself, "Why don't you guys just listen instead of singing?""
But after they played "We Will Rock You" at Bingley Hall in the Midlands of England in the late 1970s, Brian told the late lead singer Freddie Mercury that they should start asking the crowd to sing along because their "energy" can do amazing things.
He added, "Anyway, when we got off stage that night at Bingley Hall, we all looked at each other in shock because the singing from the crowd was so loud. And I told Freddie, "Maybe we shouldn't try to stop this. Maybe we should try to make it happen." This kind of energy seems to be happening, so maybe we should use it. And everyone agreed that this was a really cool idea that we should try."
